THE RIGHTEOUS AMONG NATIONS

A Quote that is frequently misquoted; A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.

Was the recent kidnapping of Gilad Shaar, Naftali Frenkel and Eyal Yifrach an underlying message of the quote that is often misquoted? Is the Presbyterian Church , USA, purporting that Israel adamantly consistent decisions are their hobgoblin, (bad impulse) to change? But, when we force things that are not really alike, to be alike, (consistent), is that correspondingly a bad thing? How should Israel take exception to the Presbyterian Church, USA, when the former KKK grand wizard, and ally to Iranian leaders, congratulates them on its’ vote to divest from companies that do business with Israel? To add insult to injury with that same lethal tongue you say you love us, (Jewish people and Israel). Furthermore, you would like to be considered, “the righteous among nations”.

The American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist, Ralph Waldo Emerson, main recurring themes is the desire for each individual to eschew from conformity and false consistency. In fact throughout history a well thought-out consistency, (within the realm of Judaism and the laws of halakha), is the hallmark of a rational mind.

The reality is to be great is to be misunderstood. As we are created b’tzelem Elohim, in God’s image Emerson’s advice to us, (as we are self-reliant), is to pursue our own instincts and ideas. In life we learn from our past chronicles and memoirs.

Within traditional Judaism, adhering to the laws of kashrut and halakha means we shall never boil a kid in it’s mother’s milk. God said, “there is a reason for separation” and not to follow suit of the majority or of all.

Where are Shaar, Frenkel and Yifrach? Is the kidnapping of the teens serving as a vicarious punishment or is it just a demonstration of the perpetrators insecurities? The righteous among nations helped the Jewish people. They were not indignant nor did they aid to induce pain and suffering. The Jewish people’s indelible history cries to our heart that we are doing the right thing. Israel and the families of the missing teens, my prayers are with you.
